Te Pae Tawhiti Distant Horizons Award for Aotearoa, New Zealand and Pasifika Speculative Fiction is Live!

So, my secret news is finally out. I’m the convenor for Te Pae Tawhiti Distant Horizons Award for speculative fiction*. (Speculative fiction is a catch-all name for fantasy, science fiction and horror, because of the, “what if?” element involved in those stories.)

I’m very excited about the project, because I think speculative fiction is special, and can play an important part in imagining a better future—a la Ursula Le Guin’s speech to accept the American National Book Award.

And I’m also excited to be part of showcasing the variety and depth of speculative fiction from this little corner of the world. (Aotearoa, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.)

A round black sticker edged in green with green text "Te Pae Tawhiti" and a green-outlined image composed of a book standing at right angles, with the head of a waka acting as the upright cover, and a tentacle wrapped around it. The pages are fluttering down the bottom. And it's all set in a starry sky representing the distant horizon that Te Pae Tawhiti stands for.

The website is launched and I think it looks really pretty with art from the talented Cerid, of Curious Cerid.

And of course if you are a speculative fiction author from this part of the world, be sure you submit a story, here.

Or if you just love speculative fiction, or don’t have a story out this year, we’d love you to put your name down as a judge, here.

Happy reading,
A.J. Ponder
