How to find a literary agent in 2024 (A short translation from a site that shall remain unnamed)

Dear authors, have you not got enough to do what with researching, writing, editing, and more editing….

Are self-important agencies telling you how you can waste your time unproductively? That you can bag that elusive literary agent in 2024. Well, maybe you’re one of the happy few who can talk the brass balls off a raging bull.

So why not take a look at the steps:

Step 1) Research and shortlist the literary agents that best suit your genre

Step 2) Follow the instructions the agent gives you and write an effective query letter

Step 3) Be very famous.

Wait, what? You’re not already famous. That’s shocking. What are you even doing trying to be an author if you don’t have a following of half a bazillion followers on tickbook? But never you worry, this is where step 4 comes in handy.

Step 4) Be very rich. Rich enough to be able to throw away a few thousand buckaroos on publicity. And this is where our agency (the one that says you can find a literary agency in 2024) comes in handy. We have industry insiders who are actually very good, and just as desperately need to pay the bills as you do. So, dear author, cough up, and you have a chance.

But the truth for most people is that it’s a numbers game, and the numbers are daunting. Or it’s a self-publishing free for all. And again, the numbers are daunting. Find your angle, find your story, look to people who have succeeded – recently- ten years ago won’t cut it. It was a different game back then.

And write. Find the fun. You may never get where you want to go, but you can always enjoy the journey. And that journey for many will never include a literary agent. Don’t let anyone shame you into things you can’t afford. Be you and…

Happy writing.
