Good bears, bad bears, focus bears, libertarian bears and teddy bears and yet another attempt to organise the chaos.
With everything moving so fast these days it’s hard to focus when there’s always something new and exciting to see. Take bears for example.
In the past the only stories you’d hear about bears are maybe swimming in a pool, or a tragic hiking death, but not these days, no. Instead, everything appears to be super-charged. From the hilarious bears of Grafton taking over a “libertarian paradise” to the slightly more sinister, who’d you rather meet in the woods, a man or a bear? meme. And everyone can have their own answers to this. Mine is that it very much depends on the man (as if we’d get a choice).
And now with America heading into an election, not to mention the Olympics, my brain is like, please pretty please, I want to know what’s HAPPENING. I want to know it all!!!!
Priorities (Bear with me.)
But the day is only so long and it’s important to make priorities. Fencing and gymnastics…am I right? Okay, fencing and gymnastics are probably a bit of an oddball Olympic obsessions, but with two books due, I really have to pick and choose what I want to watch.
As for the American election, I know I should be sticking closer to home, and pressuring our own politicians to do the right thing. Really focus that attention and not spray it around.
And so I’m trying a new focus app. (It doesn’t hurt that my old one, 4thewords has just got a bit too expensive for my taste, as well as getting a little boggy with too many choices. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great site and I find the monsters great when writing fresh, but for editing—which is what takes most of my time—it’s not as good.)
This one is Focus Bear. It’s designed for AuDHD and is not only incredibly annoying by soft-blocking the URL’s I’ve asked it to—but also seems to help cool down that feeling of impending bear attack, er, disaster and insist on regular breaks. All of which can be shut down, or delayed. But if anyone knows how to plan out a day on it, please let me know, because that would certainly help. Otherwise it’s great. I suspect I’ll just stick with the free option though.
And so that’s it really, the battle between the bears.
If you’re trying out any focus apps please let me know. I’ve got two books to finish and I’m running out of time. Back to work for now though, and good luck, may you be productive and happy, too!
Happy writing, and happy reading all.
A.J.
P.S. If you’re interested in 4thewords I’ve written about it here, and the website is here.
P.P.S. I’ve had a more than a few hard sells about getting literary agents, so I put my thoughts on this here.
P.P.P.S. I’m not currently using this ap. Like most aps, this had a finite useful life for me. Currently, I’m using a combination of focus games and a slick program that works like a digital whiteboard.
